What is anal fissure?

It is an elongated breach or small tear within the lining of the long axis of the anus or anal canal. It can cause severe pain and sometimes bleeding occurs during stool or after movement.

CAUSE

1. The main cause is while constipation
2. Inflammatory bowel disease
3. Straining
4. High internal sphincter tone
5. Straining during childbirth or movement
6. Another cause is Anal Cancer, Herpes

DISTRIBUTION OR TYPE OF ANAL FISSURE

1. Anterior 11% means the position of tear towards the scrotum
2. Lateral 1% means the position of tear towards the left or right buttock
3. Posterior 83% means the position of tear towards Coccyx or back

SYMPTOMS

1. Pain during stooling, severe sharp agonizing pain during defecation and lasting an hour or more
2. A visible tear within the skin around the anus
3. Deeper the fissure, the longer the pain lasts
4. Discharge
5. Stools are streaked with bright red blood
6. Burning or itching around the anus
7. A skin tag may be seen from outside

ON EXAMINATION, HOW TO DIAGNOSE?

1. Digital examination and anoscope examination
2. Sentinel tags within the chronic cases are often seen
3. Manual rectal examination is another confirmatory diagnosis

MANAGEMENT AND PREVENTION

• Keep the region dry to prevent any contamination
• Drink a lot of liquids, eat fiber rich food
• Work-out consistently to stay away from blockage
• Change the diapers of the babies every now and again
• Perfect and dry, the region
• Clean with warm water and gentle soap
• High roughage diet
