What is heartburn?

Medically referred to as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), it occurs when stomach acid flows back into the food pipe (esophagus). Such acid reflux irritates the esophagus and a person feels a burning sensation behind the chest. Although GERD is a chronic digestive disease, occasional heartburn can be considered a condition and not a disease if we understand its cause and are able to treat heartburn naturally.

Causation, symptoms and how to get relief of heartburn at home

When the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the muscle responsible for holding stomach contents in place, begins to relax , it causes heartburn. If we are careful not to loosen the valve between the stomach and the esophagus, we can prevent heartburn to a large extent. Controlling how we eat is just as important as choosing the food we eat. Over food, less water intake, irregular diet etc. can cause this problem despite following healthy food choices.

When we eat more than our stomach can handle, we increase the chance that the excess mass will move up into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation. In the same way, if we don't eat for a long time, we allow acidity to form, and then we pack food into the stomach, it can allow the acid to be pumped up into the esophagus. In such cases, it is wise to drink some water before eating to calm the acid fury in the stomach. But more importantly, one should avoid the odd interval of eating and overeating.

Weight gain also increases the possibility of heartburn because it slows the movement of food through the digestive system and puts pressure on the abdomen. Taking measures to control your weight can provide an overall solution to your heartburn problem. Eating a balanced diet at regular intervals and exercising to help digest food not only helps in reducing weight and thus heartburn, but also leads to maintaining a healthy lifestyle!

Immediate taking sleep after heavy food can cause the heartburn or acid reflux. Let the food settle and go to sleep at least 1/2 hour after eating. If the heartburn persists, then sleeping with the head in an elevated position will also help.

Heartburn is more likely to occur during pregnancy because the uterus puts more pressure on the stomach and esophagus. The hormone also slows down digestion, causing acid to flow into the esophagus. To avoid heartburn during pregnancy, you should reduce the amount of food and cover by increasing the frequency. One should also avoid or limit tea/coffee, fried and spicy foods. Although lemon food is good during pregnancy, but if it causes acidity, it can be diluted or added with sugar to prevent heartburn.
Smoking and drinking alcohol also cause heartburn. Drinking too much alcohol relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), allowing acid to leak into the esophagus.

With age, the muscle in the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) becomes weak. In this case, it will be useful to pay attention to choosing the right food and eat at regular intervals. Now, since the digestive system is weak, it is important to maintain a good balanced diet.

Avoiding certain foods that cause acidity helps stop heartburn. Too much intake of rich and fried foods, tea or coffee or citrus fruits and even many sweets can cause severely derangement of stomach. You just need to watch the acid that accumulates in your stomach so that it doesn't splash against the lower esophageal sphincter and leave you with heartburn and grimaces.

If the heartburn is persistent, it is possible that the liver is affected. One should seek medical attention and take care of the liver.

Ignoring your heartburn or acid reflux problem for a long time can cause serious complications.
